One, I realized that I had only minutes ago put down my notebook, which is typically my only defense against the bright and scary outside world. "Too late," I thought. No turning back now. Two, I was visited by a memory of a scene in the Stanley Kubrick movie "Full Metal Jacket." In this scene, an American soldier is walking through a war-torn city in North Viet Nam. He sees on the ground a teddy bear, and bending to pick it up, he realizes too late that it is booby-trapped. It explodes and he is killed. "Nah...that's not very likely," I told myself, only half-believing it. Ahead I trudged; a little slower, maybe. Once the sweatshirt was in my hand and had not and was not exploding, I breathed again. It was then that I noticed the sounds around me in the gym. Up to that point, only the sound I heard was that of my own increasingly stressed heartbeat. I placed the sweatshirt down, looked for the welcoming eyes of my herd, and returned to workout mode. It is also makes it painfully obvious, I LOVE nerds/geeks. I have to say, they make the every day things fun, interesting, and noticeable. Yes, I would have moved the dreaded sweatshirt without hesitation - and probably (gasp) asked those patrons around us if the shirt was theirs before moving it. But, where's the fun in that? I would much rather be surrounded by people who are different, unique and hilarious. You guys' minds don't work like mine and I love it. I'm sorry I wasn't a tougher Maggot but Miss Alex chose to have her happy hour from 2:30am-6am. That would be fine if she would just allow me sleep on the couch as she plays.
